Desert Monolith
Sonoran Desert
A monolithic concrete residence that emerges from the Sonoran sands. Designed as a sanctuary from the intense heat, the home uses thermal mass and deep-set openings to create a cool, contemplative interior.
The Sonoran Desert is an environment of extremes. To build here is to engage in a dialogue with intensity. Desert Monolith was conceived not as a structure placed on the sand, but as an extension of the geology itself.
The primary material is a custom-pigmented concrete, matched to the local earth. Thick walls provide an essential thermal buffer, while a central 'wind chimney' draws hot air up and out, maintaining a natural flow of cool air even in the height of summer.
Internal courtyards are positioned to capture the shifting shadows of Saguaro cacti, turning the landscape into a living gallery that changes every hour. This is architecture as a lens, focusing the vast desert scale into intimate moments of light and shade.
